January 23, 2008It’s an ongoing debate, what’s the difference between erotica and porn. We know the answer: ‘It depends’.
It depends on who’s asking, and who’s telling. Some people consider all forms of sexual expression to be porn, while many consider the two very different. Madison avenue agrees with the latter, and considers the demographic for consumers of erotica to be completely separate from consumers of ‘porn’.
Consider in this regard the Polish artist Walerian Borowczyk (1923-2006), considered by many to be one of the great auteurs of 1960-70s erotic cinema; His work is currently on display at the Centre of Contemporary art in Warsaw.
Borowczyk’s work is displayed in context, showing that he not only produced erotic films, but had broad exposure to the arts, and challenging the notion that his films lacked artistic merit.
